JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's Degree from a recognized college or university with a major in Social Work, Psychology, Guidance and Counseling or Criminal Justice; AND
  • Two (2) years of full-time paid experience working in the social services field, one (1) of experience must be working primarily with children as a Counselor or Social Worker.

    NOTE:  Part-time work (between 20 and 35 hours a week) experience will be pro-rate

 

DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES:

  • As a condition of employment, appointed candidates must pass a criminal history check, be fingerprinted, and complete a drug screen.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

The Child Advocate provides services to the mentally disabled and to children, and families of those children, who are victims of physical or sexual abuse. These employees provide emotional support and crisis counseling; explain court procedures to the child and family; accompany victims to court; provide case update information, make referrals to appropriate counseling agencies for long-term therapy when necessary; and function as a team member with Assistant Prosecutors, the Department of Human Services and Police Department Child Units. The Child Advocate must follow child protocol and the Child Protection Law of the State of Michigan and will perform other duties as assigned.
