DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES
This position is located in the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in the Jails Division. The Public Health Sanitarian investigates and evaluates facilities in the Wayne County Jails having public health significance including food service, laundry, housing units, pest control, medical facilities and recreation areas. This position will consult regularly with the Director of Jail Compliance, command staff, facilities managers and housekeeping supervisors in matters relating to public environmental health issues in the jails. The Public Health Sanitarian will also provide training to officers, inmate workers and other staff members as needed. This position will work closely with MIOSHA, Michigan Department of Corrections, Department of Justice and the Wayne County Risk Management Division to correct and maintain any environmental, public health, safety or sanitation issues in the jails.
A Bachelor's Degree from a recognized college or university with a major in Public or Environmental Health, Sanitary Science, Civil Engineering or the Physical, Chemical or Natural Sciences; AND Two (2) years of post-degree, full-time paid professional environmental/public health experience; AND State of Michigan Sanitarian Registration and/or Registered Environmental Health Specialist / Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) through National Environmental Health Association (NEHA). Candidates may obtain the National REHS/RS credential within 12 months of appointment to this position and must maintain the REHS/RS credential while employed in this position.
