Reporting to the Environmental Health Administrator, the Food Safety Manager oversees the direct implementation of policies and procedures for the Food Safety Unit. This includes preparation for accreditation through self-assessment audits, QA and training; as well as coordination of foodborne illness investigations by conducting surveillance activities, working with HHVS and other agencies to limit exposures and/or additional transmission, and to act as a liaison between local, State and Federal agencies. This position will develop policies and procedures in accordance with State and Federal guidelines; set goals and objectives for all food programs; establish work priorities and work assignments; submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports; resolve appeals from the business community; provide customer service and education; and respond to emergencies as directed by Department Executives and as notified by after-hours answering service. Other duties or responsibilities may be assigned when necessary.


At the time of application, eligible persons must have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Engineering, Biological Science, or a closely related field; AND
  • Registration (state or national) as a Sanitarian (Environmental Health Specialist) or licensed as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or licensed as a professional engineer; AND
  • At least six years environmental health experience, of which at least four years are to be in general environmental health program areas (food services sanitation, water supplies, on-site sewage disposal management, institutional sanitation, vector control, recreational sanitation, etc.) Experience must include at least two years of supervisory or special assessment experience; AND
  • A valid State of Michigan driver's license and acceptable driving record.

NOTE: A Master's Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Engineering, or closely related field, if appropriate, may be substituted for 1 year of the above listed 6 years of experience, not including the supervisory experience requirement.


It is required that those hired for this position have an automobile available for daily use on a mileage reimbursement basis. Persons in this position must maintain required registration or licensure throughout their duration in this classification.
