JOIN OUR TEAM

Hearing and Vision Technicians provide preschool and school-age hearing and vision screening in Michigan according to the Public Health Code; Act 368 of 1978; Part 93. Hearing and Vision Technicians are employed by local health departments (LHDs) and comprehensively trained by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to provide screenings in the LHD service area.

Under limited supervision, performs preliminary and re-test hearing and vision screening at various schools throughout Out-Wayne County to detect hearing or vision abnormalities in children. Interprets and records test results and performs any necessary follow-up by letter, phone, or conference. Travels to various schools throughout Out-Wayne County. Utilizes current county-wide and department-specific software to complete assignments.


Job Summary:

The Hearing and Vision Technician provides screenings to youth in schools, daycare and Head Start programs.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; AND
  • One (1) year of paid or volunteer experience working with children in a medical setting (Doctor's office, clinic or hospital) or nine (9) months of paid or volunteer experience working in an education setting (Daycare, after-school program, preschool, elementary/secondary school, school lunchroom and school library)

NOTE:

  • A valid state of Michigan driver's license with safe and acceptable driving record
  • An automobile available for transportation during work hours on a reimbursed mileage basis
  • Attend the two-week hearing threshold and the one-week vision training courses provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and obtain the hearing threshold and vision certification within two years of hire, if trainings are offered by MDHHS or as soon thereafter

  • •Provide preliminary hearing screening to children and adolescents
  • •Provide vision screening to children and adolescents
  • •Document results of screening correctly and in a timely manner
  • •Enter data into pre-approved forms and databases. Assist with generating monthly reports
  • •Correctly complete and submit necessary forms for each program, times sheets, and activity sheets in a timely manner
  • •Schedule screening sessions in the community
  • •Make follow-up telephone calls regarding screening sessions, results, and referrals
  • •Develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of people to assure efficient screenings

  • Technician Responsibilities:
  • It is expected that each local health department (LHD) hearing and vision technician will:
  • •Follow screening procedures precisely as outlined in the hearing and vision technician manual with little or no deviation
  • •Demonstrate an ability to talk to groups of people and children
  • •Demonstrate an ability to differentiate between a child's lack of understanding and inability to see
  • •Submit proper vision and hearing reports and records within deadlines
  • •Notify the LHD of the inability to maintain the assigned screening schedule
  • •Notify the LHD when equipment is inoperable
  • •Notify the LHD of planned termination of employment to allow ample time to find and train a replacement
  • •Maintain a clean and neat worksite with appropriate supplies and materials available
  • •Attend the annual MDHHS conference and workshop at least once every two (2) years for the purpose of reviewing course work material, reinforcing and updating skills, and learning new vision-related information
  • •Shadow HV3 Technicians and work closely with H&V Coordinator
  • •Complete state training for vision, hearing and thresholding
  • •Learn to schedule schools and input on calendar
  • •Learn necessary forms, data entry, time sheets and computer systems
  • •Develop relationships with schools and accommodate their class schedules
  • •Maintain and calibrate hearing and vision equipment
  • •Interpret and determine required actions for a referral
  • •Enter data into forms and databases
  • •Submit necessary documents and forms for hearing and vision programs
  • •Effectively schedule screenings in schools to insure efficiency
  • •Proficiently compile paperwork, forms computer skills and data entry
  • •Assist with office duties and follow up
  • •Update training and State standardization for recertification
