DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES

Maintain highways and structures on state, municipal and rural roads and rights-of-ways. Duties include litter pick up from roads and freeways, flagging traffic, working an air hammer and post pounder, pounding stakes and posts, mixing concrete, cold patching, shoveling asphalt & debris, changing under blades, assisting in snow and ice operations, use of hand tools, lawn mowers and power tools, and other related duties as assigned. Includes assisting tradesmen with repairs and general maintenance; cleaning shops and bathrooms as needed; performing labor-intensive duties such as jack hammering, shoveling concrete, dirt, and pump house materials.

Required Tasks

  • Major Job Duties:
  • Set out signs and cones around work areas to divert traffic.
  • Flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead.
  • Drive trucks to transport crews and equipment to work sites.
  • Drive equipment and vehicles with adjustable attachments to mow grass and weeds.
  • Clean and clear debris from culverts, catch basins, drop inlets, ditches, and other drain structures.
  • Remove litter and debris from roadways
  • Perform labor-intensive work such as jackhammering, shoveling, etc.
  • Assist in the install or repair of guardrails, road shoulders, berms, highway markers, warning signals, signs using hand and power tools.
  • Haul and spread sand, gravel, and clay to fill washouts and repair road shoulders.
  • Inspect, clean, and repair drainage systems, bridges, tunnels, and other structures.
  • Dump, spread, and tamp asphalt, using pneumatic tampers, to repair joints and patch broken pavement.
  • Perform roadside landscaping work, such as clearing weeds and brush, and planting and trimming trees.
  • Assist in Snow and ice operations and blade changeouts.
  • Assist trades.
  • Clean bathrooms or other areas.
  • Other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Acceptable Driver's Record (no more than 7 Points)
  • Valid Operator's License
