DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES

Painters perform a variety of journeyman painting work such as preparing surfaces, mixing and matching paints and stains, painting interiors and exteriors, application and knowledge of floor epoxy coatings and other related duties in the Roads Maintenance Division Building Maintenance section.

• Painting, prepping, repairing interior and exterior surfaces with various implements.
• Knowledge of paint applications and products.
• Knowledge and use of preparatory supplies and equipment - puttying wooden surfaces, preparing metal and wooden surfaces for painting or staining with a brush or paint gun, washing, scraping, burning and sandpapering surfaces.
• Mix and match paint and stains.
• Painting wooden and metal surfaces with spray gun and brush.
• Drywall mudding and taping.
• Maintenance of equipment.
• Erecting and working from scaffolding - working at heights.
• Proper use of floor epoxy.
• Operating airless prayers, self-contained paint machines and other related equipment.
• Maintain valid state of Michigan driver's license.
• Washing, scraping, burning, sandpapering surfaces for paint preparation.
• Puttying small defects in woodwork.
• Keep a neat and clean work area.
• Refinish furniture.
• Replace broken glass in windows.
• Work under supervision of a Foreperson or Supervisor who makes work assignments and checks working process upon completion.

• Educational/Experience Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED; AND
  • At least five years full-time paid experience as a painter (must include washing, scraping, burning, sandpapering surfaces preparatory to painting; painting both the interior and exterior of buildings; panting wooden and metal surfaces with a brush and spray gun; puttying small defects in woodwork; replacing broken glass in windows; refinishing furniture; and erecting and working from scaffolding to paint buildings OR;
  • Completion of a formal apprentice training program for the painter trade.
  • A valid Driver's license with a safe and acceptable Driving Record (No more than 7 points)
