Purpose/Description

The Plumber in Roads Maintenance Division performs skilled work in installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems, fixtures and equipment. The Plumber will assemble, install, or repair pipes, fittings, or fixtures of heating, water, or drainage systems, according to specifications or plumbing codes in Buildings and facilities within Roads Maintenance Division. The Plumber usually works independently following accepted trade practices and may be required to do occasional steam fitting.


  • Required Knowledge
    • Mechanical-Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
    • Building and Construction-Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
    • Design-Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
    • Customer and Personal Service-Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Required Tasks
    • Maintain plumbing fixtures in offices and yards.
    • Maintain water lines.
    • Maintain drains.
    • Maintain boilers.
    • Keep records.
    • Other Duties include:
    • Maintain or repair plumbing by replacing defective washers, replacing or mending broken pipes, or opening clogged drains.
    • Measure, cut, thread, or bend pipe to required angle, using hand or power tools or machines, such as pipe cutters, pipe-threading machines, or pipe-bending machines.
    • Maintain hoses and fill stations.
    • Install pipe assemblies, fittings, fixtures, valves, appliances such as dishwashers or water heaters, or fixtures such as sinks or toilets, using hand or power tools.
    • Review blueprints, building codes, or specifications to determine work details or procedures.
    • Install underground storm, sanitary, or water piping systems, extending piping as needed to connect fixtures and plumbing.
    • Install green plumbing equipment, such as faucet flow restrictors, dual-flush or pressure-assisted flush toilets, or tankless hot water heaters.
    • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Educational Requirements
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Apprenticeship in skilled trades as a plumber.
    • Valid state of Michigan Plumber, Journeyperson license
    • Backflow prevention license or obtain within six months of employment. Extension may be given at the discretion of management.
  • Experience Requirements
    • Five years as a full-time paid licensed Plumber
    • Valid state of Michigan Driver's license with a safe and acceptable driving record (no more than 7 points)
