DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES

Steamfitters perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repairs of pipes and accessories to heating, steam, hot water, and refrigeration systems in County owned and operated facilities. Work is performed under the general direction of a Steamfitter foreman and in accordance with standard trade practices.

Required Tasks

  • Troubleshoot, test operate, and perform preventative maintenance on all heating, steam, hot water, and refrigeration systems.
  • Lay out full scale drawings of pipe systems, supports, or related equipment, according to blueprints.
  • Assemble or secure pipes, tubes, fittings, or related equipment, according to specifications, by welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, or threading joints.
  • Measure and mark pipes for cutting or threading.
  • Inspect, examine, or test installed systems or pipe lines, using pressure gauge, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods.
  • Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair, according to specifications.
  • Attach pipes to walls, structures, or fixtures, such as radiators or tanks, using brackets, clamps, tools, or welding equipment.
  • Modify, clean, or maintain pipe systems, units, fittings, or related machines or equipment, using hand or power tools.
  • Select pipe sizes, types, or related materials, such as supports, hangers, or hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.
  • Cut or bore holes in structures, such as bulkheads, decks, walls, or mains, prior to pipe installation, using hand or power tools.
  • Install and maintain pneumatic control systems and related accessories.
  • Install and maintain hydraulic systems and related piping, accessories and controls.
  • Shut off steam, water, or other gases or liquids from pipe sections, using valve keys or wrenches.
  • Remove and replace worn components.
  • Handling and Moving Objects: Cut metal components for installation.
  • Drill holes in construction materials.
  • Fabricate parts or components.
  • Install gauges or controls.
  • Install green plumbing or water handling systems.
  • Install plumbing or piping.
  • Mark reference points on construction materials.
  • Weld metal components.
  • Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material: Inspect plumbing systems or fixtures.
  • Inspect work sites to identify potential environmental or safety hazards.
  • Test green technology installations to verify performance.

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND
  • Journeyman; AND
  • Two years of post- secondary technical education or a recognized apprenticeship in the area of heating and cooling system design and maintenance.

Experience Requirements

  • Two years of work experience in the areas of heating, ventilating, and cooling systems maintenance, repair and welding.
