Purpose/Description

The Bridge Mechanic will ensure that all of Wayne County's Pump stations and movable Bridges as well as all of the Metro Airport Pump stations are operating at peak capability. This is done in conjunction and coordination with the Pump/Bridge leadership and represents a vital component in overall collective efforts of the structures section to provide safe, uninterrupted travel for motorists.







  • Required Tasks
    • Repair and maintain pumps in State (MDOT), County and Airport Authority pump stations
    • Repair and maintain motor components in Structure's movable bridges
    • Fabricate components needed to insure the proper operation of pump stations and movable bridges.
    • Operate a Boom Truck - Obtain a crane operator's credential.
    • Be proficient in the use of a variety of tools - manual, power and shop tools.
    • Inspect pump stations and movable bridges.
    • Enter data into inspection logs.
    • Dismantle and rebuild axial flow pumps and submersible pumps.
    • Lubricate pumps, gears and bearings at moveable bridges.
    • Use of cutting torch and welder.
    • Fabricate and repair pumphouse ladders/railings.
    • Run air hammers.
    • Operate electric tools.
    • Heavy use of mechanical hand tools.
    • Sandblasting and coating pump exteriors.
    • Assist Bridge Workers with bridge repair as needed.
    • Complete confined space training.
    • Perform other related duties and special tasks as assigned.

Qualifications for External Candidates

  • Educational/Experience Requirements
    • High school diploma or equivalent AND
    • Valid CDL With "A" and "N" endorsement including Air Brakes, with a safe and acceptable driving record; AND
    • AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
      1. Two (2) years full-time paid experience performing semi-skilled work in maintaining and repairing a variety of mechanical equipment and/or structures; OR
      2. One (1) year of the above experience and a one (1) year vocational course in mechanics or machine shop; OR
      3. One (1) year of experience in the structural maintenance section (Bridges) performing semi-skilled work in maintaining and repairing a variety of mechanical equipment and/or bridge structures.

Special Conditions

Candidates hired to this classification must obtain and maintain DOT medical documents as required by the State of Michigan for CDL drivers and must have the ability to obtain Wayne County Airport Authority credentials.

TYPES OF ASSESSMENTS

A written assessment will be administered covering knowledge of diagnosis, repairs and maintenance of structures, pumphouses, tool identification, and other technical knowledge.

A welding and cutting assessment will be administered on a pass/fail basis.

Candidates must pass all assessments in order to be placed on the eligibility list.
