DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES:

Bridge Mechanics perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of movable bridges and storm pumps. These employees may periodically inspect, lubricate and service centrifugal and axial flow pumps and machinery; submit written reports regarding their condition and operate equipment required in bridge maintenance. Bridge Mechanics will at times be required to operate a boom truck, along with being proficient in the operation of a wide variety of tools (manual, power and shop). Bridge Mechanics clean pumps, sumps and pump houses and they may assist with replacing, repairing and installing pumps; repairing furnaces and radiators; installing, repairing, cutting and removing water and dirt from counterweight pits.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A High School Diploma or its equivalent; AND
  2. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Group "A" and "N' endorsement; AND
  3. A valid driver's license and an acceptable safe driving record (must have seven or fewer points accumulated for moving violations within the last two years.) AND AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
    1. Two (2) years full-time paid experience performing semi-skilled work in maintaining and repairing a variety of mechanical equipment; OR
    2. One (1) year of the above experience and a one (1) year vocational course in mechanics or machine shop; OR
    3. One (1) year of experience in the structural maintenance section (Bridges) performing semi-skilled work in maintaining and repairing a variety of mechanical equipment and/or bridge structures.

TYPES OF TESTS:

A Performance test (pass/fail) will cover basic welding (must be able to successfully complete a fillet weld).
