Job Summary

Juvenile Detention Specialist Team Leader will participate in the security, care, and custody of youth residents in the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility who have been accused of criminal activity and are currently undergoing the judicial process. Team leaders are responsible for assisting with staff training, providing leadership, and coaching to new hires, promoting positive engagement with residents, and maintaining effective communication, including documentation. Team leaders will assist with staff pod assignments, youth pod management, and daily operational needs for the facility.


Required Tasks

  • Responsible for the supervision and custodial care of a group of youths in the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility.
  • Assist with JDS new hire training, and ongoing trainings.
  • Handle assignment flexibility for staff development and training.
  • Assist with the coordination of pod management assignments for youth and staff.
  • Promote and encourage a positive engagement and intervention for staff and residents.
  • Participate in the care, guidance and recreation of resident youths.
  • Responsible for observing and following institutional policies, procedures and specific instructions.
  • Supervise and instruct youths in personal hygiene, housekeeping and special detail work within the institution.
  • Counsel delinquent youths on immediate behavioral problems as they arise.
  • Responsible for the appropriate physical crisis intervention of youths during crisis moments.
  • Responsible for regularly checking email and other communications to stay abreast of updates and changes.
  • Supervise meals and maintain records of activities and behavior of youths in their charge.
  • Report unusual incidents and all injuries to the Supervisor on duty.
  • Responsible for documentation of youth activities and behavior management including documenting in JAIS system.
  • Transport juveniles as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent and three (3) years of experience in corrections or a childcaring institution (CCI).

Special Conditions

  • A valid State of Michigan Driver's license, and an acceptable safe driving record.
  • Applicant obtain clearance from Child Protective Services clearance before hire and DHHS clearance annually thereafter.
  • Be willing to accept appointment to any one of the three shifts in any seven-day work week schedule, Monday through Sunday, including holidays;
  • Accept mandatory overtime.
