Description

The Nurse Practitioner provides pediatric psychiatric care or specialty services under the general clinical direction of the Medical Director/Psychiatrist and within the 24-hour operating Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility. The Nurse Practitioner participates in program evaluation and improvement and may be responsible for organizing or participating in directing a specific specialty program.

Required Tasks

  • Conduct and complete psychiatric examinations according to the guidelines outlined by the Michigan Department of Community Health Behavior and Health, MDHHS Licensing Rules for Child Caring Institutions, WCJDF Medical and Health Care Licensing Standards.
  • Prescribe and/or administer medications as necessary and appropriate.
  • Participate in on-call coverage at a 24-hour facility for pediatric clients.
  • Evaluate and manage acute psychiatric/behavioral episodes and events including suicidal ideation/attempts, manic episodes, disruptive behavior. Provide precaution recommendations as well as further referrals if necessary.
  • Provide accurate and complete documentation in the electronic medical record of care provided in accordance with WCJDF and the State of Michigan Guidelines.
  • Provide expert education and counseling to clients as well as client guardians, members of the professional and lay community. Evaluate effectiveness of education and counseling of clinic protocols and practices.
  • Ensure that all laboratory results, normal and abnormal, are reviewed, signed and scanned into the EMR as they become available. Document disposition of all abnormal results e.g. treatment provided, referrals made, etc. as appropriate.
  • Participate in meetings, planning and training as appropriate.
  • Work with staff Psychiatrist, behavioral therapist, and medical staff in evaluation and management of clients as a collaborating team.
  • Exhibit systems thinking by designing, implementing, and evaluating clinical services as directed.
  • Assist in the review of psychiatric protocols, policies, and procedures for accuracy, appropriateness and completeness as compared with the up to date protocols, policies, and procedures. Suggest corrections and modifications as appropriate. WCJDF Medical Director retains authority and responsibility for adherence to the protocols.
  • Maintain all appropriate licensure (including DEA, Drug Control License, Controlled Substance License) containing medical/nursing education credits and certificates (including malpractice insurance) as required by the WCJDF and the State of Michigan.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times. Strict adherence to HIPAA guidelines as outlined by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and WCJDF.
  • Obtain credentialing in required content (e.g., BLS).
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited program.
  • PMHNP certification is highly preferred.
  • Current valid and unrestricted license to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Possess a current certification through an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Credentialing Agency as a Nurse Practitioner with a specialty in Pediatrics and/or Psychiatry.
  • Two (2) or more years of post-degree experience as a Nurse Practitioner in psychiatry.

Special Conditions

  • Candidates must be cleared to work in a childcaring institution by Child Welfare Licensing/Child Protective Services. Candidates that have lived outside of the State of Michigan must provide clearance from that state.
