DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES

Paralegals support and assist attorneys in the Department of Corporation Counsel. A Paralegal writes, types, edits, formats, and proofreads legal documents including pleadings, correspondence, contracts, and memoranda as directed by an attorney; conducts legal research, reviews, reads, and analyzes legal and other documents and reports on information from various sources; manages cases, including opening and closing files in the office case management system, calendaring, and tracking court deadlines, scheduling depositions and court reporters; summarizes depositions, retrieves, reviews and redacts documents, locates witnesses and assists in developing strategies and file work up, including preparing the attorney for trial. Documents, spreadsheets, and presentations will be completed using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as case management software, E-filing, and on-line legal research tools. The Paralegal will also be performing general office duties, such as filing, copying, scanning, shredding, answering phones, and maintaining office supplies; delivering documents in person and/or electronically with the courts, agencies, or other persons and performing additional duties as assigned.

ELIGIBLE PERSONS:

At the time of application, eligible persons must have:

  • Four (4) years full-time paid civil legal experience, in a law firm, legal department, or other legal setting, which includes drafting legal documents, legal research, e-filing, and case management; OR
  • A paralegal certificate and three (3) years of full-time paid civil legal experience in a law firm, legal department, or other legal setting, which includes drafting legal documents, legal research, e-filing and case management; OR
  • An Associate's Degree from an accredited school in Paralegal Studies/Legal Administration and two (2) years full time paid civil legal experience, in a law firm, legal department, or other legal setting, which includes drafting legal documents, legal research, e-filing and case management; OR
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school and one (1) year full time paid civil legal experience in a law firm, legal department, or other legal setting, which includes drafting legal documents, legal research, e-filing and case management; OR
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school and a paralegal certificate; OR
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school in Paralegal Studies/Legal Administration.
