JOB SUMMARY

The Training Specialist is responsible for developing the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility (WCJDF) staff by facilitating and creating curricula for the training academy, in-service trainings, assist with coaching, mentoring, and assisting the Director of Training with additional tasks as needed.


Required Task

  • Maintain specialized certifications and provides ongoing training to staff in CPR/First Aid, Handle with Care crisis intervention program, Reality Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other facility approved modalities.
  • Develop and facilitate training sessions, workshops, and seminars, employing engaging teaching techniques to enhance learning.
  • Serve as a coach and mentor to staff through modeling behaviors taught in the academy and in-service trainings.
  • Research and serve as a subject matter expert on relevant topics including facility operation rules and personnel, industry knowledge, and current training materials, techniques and strategies.
  • Collaborate with directors, deputy directors, managers, and supervisors to identify training needs and develop training programs accordingly.
  • Analyze training needs assessments and develop/update annual training calendar, lesson plans, and curriculum based on results.
  • Maintain accurate records of training activities, participant progress, and feedback to report on program effectiveness.
  • Work closely with Training Director to align training initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Serve as liaison between the training department and JDF leadership to ensure that all staff are current on trainings and certifications and that the training department can respond appropriately to the ongoing needs of the facility.
  • Provide orientation training for volunteers and interns.
  • Maintain the training room, equipment, and scheduling of the training rooms.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Education/Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Education, or a related human services field AND
  • Minimum of 2 years of training experience as either an adjunct or full-time trainer or educator;
  • Preferred: Previous experience in this capacity working with at-risk youth; OR
  • Associates degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Education, or a related human services field AND
  • Minimum of 4 years of training experience as either an adjunct or full-time trainer or educator;
  • Preferred: Previous experience in this capacity working with at-risk youth.

Special Conditions

  • Training for Trainer certification from a recognized juvenile justice training provider (e.g. NPJS, ACA, NIC, OJJDP) or similar adult learning theory required within 1 year from date of hire.
  • Candidates must receive clearance from Child Welfare Licensing (CWL) - Child Protective Services to work in a childcaring institution. Candidates that have lived outside of the state of Michigan must provide clearance from that state.
